Capstone Turbine Corporation, is a California based gas turbine manufacturer that specializes in microturbine power along with heating and cooling cogeneration systems.
The Capstone Gas Turbine Unit in Dickson TN
In late 2020 and earlier this year, we had multiple projects with Capstone. The projects were multi-faceted, in that we used photography, drone videos and product rendering technology, and graphics design to accomplish the deliverables.
The first part of the assignment was focused on still images for their annual report. We travelled to the manufacturing facility of Daltile Corporation located in Dickson TN, where Capstone has five gas turbine units installed.
We also did a drone video of the unit, which is now featured on the home page of Capstone’s website.
The Numbers:
Project duration: 1 day for photography/drone video, 1 day for CGI
Team Members: 3 including drone pilot, 3D modeler and photographer/3D artist
Deliverables: 15+ still images, 1 video, 1 digitally rendered image

The second part of the assignment included creating more assets for programs coming up in 2021. Capstone sponsors IndyCar and we created some assets representing their collaboration with IndyCar and Andretti.

It wasn’t feasible to go out into the field and complete this assignment, as the actual truck was unavailable. Therefore we decided to go the CGI/rendering route. We were able to find a similar 3D model of the truck online, which we modified to fit our needs. The background was purchased from iStock and modified in photoshop.
